This beautiful created plate was hand made and the deer in the center was hand carved so it is in low relief from the rest of the design. The artist is Veronica Villilaba and she comes from a renowned family of potters from Casas Grandes that were first generation artists. (Andres Villalba (1947-2001) was born in Colonia El Rusio south of Mata Ortiz in 1945 but lived in Mata Ortiz for many years. Andres is a first generation potter to make ceramics based on the Pacquime culture Andres was devoted to following the traditions of the ancient Pacquime potters and to honoring “those ancient people”.He was emphatic about perpetuating those traditional designs and shapes that he maintained a library of dozens books on the prehistory of the area for constant reference and inspiration. Andres greatly admired Juan Quezada and, as such, he was always striving to improve not only his painting but the building of his pots as well.
