The Maria Theresa Thaler is a silver bullion coin named after Empress Maria Theresa, who ruled Austria, Hungary, Croatia, and Bohemia from 1740 to 1780. It was first minted in 1741 and has been used continuously in world trade.
Design:
The obverse features a portrait of Empress Maria Theresa, while the reverse depicts the double-headed Habsburg eagle, which is the Coat of Arms of the House of Habsburg.
Composition:
The coin is made of .833 fine silver and .166 copper, with a net fine silver content of .7517 ounces of pure silver.
Significance:
The Maria Theresa Thaler is one of the most internationally recognized and famous silver coins in the world, and it was a dominant currency in European trade with the nations of the Levant region. It even served as the basis for the US Silver Dollar, and the word "dollar" itself is derived from "Thaler".
Restrikes:
Although the coin bears the date "1780" (the year of Maria Theresa's death), many are modern restrikes produced by various mints.
