Vivianite forms on human and animal remains when the phosphate from decomposing bodies interacts with iron and water in a low-oxygen environment, such as a waterlogged grave or bog. The crystals are initially clear but turn blue upon exposure to air, creating a blue or blue-green color on the bones and tissues. The blue-green color will eventually turn black due to exposure over time.
These specimens are incredibly cool but very fragile. It’s not unusual for parts to crumble off.
